Lucy and Ava’s story: The great care we’ve received at Alder Hey
During the pregnancy, we were told that Ava had cystic fibrosis and a scan at 28 weeks highlighted a blockage in her bowel. We hoped it would pass on its own but when it didn’t, Ava was brought to Alder Hey for treatment. Different procedures were tried and tested but they realised surgery was her only option and my little girl had stomas fitted. She has since had further surgery to sow her small intestine back together and it’s looking positive.
From day one, the staff on neonatal have given our family brilliant care and have made us feel like we’re part of the unit. It was quite overwhelming at first, seeing your little baby so poorly and then to see the medical team carrying out the procedures on her. But you soon realise it’s all to make her comfortable and well again. At first I was quite nervous but everyone took the time to be patient and showed me how I could help her too. The nurses watched over me and my confidence has grown with their help.
When you’re so far from home like us, it’s lovely to see a familiar face close by. Even though they’re busy looking after many young patients, they have taken the time to talk to me and my family. I feel comfortable knowing that when I need to, they’ll stop to have a chat with me and will always happily answer any questions I might have.
The staff here have made us feel at ease as they’ve all got to know my little girl, she even recognises their faces too. I have two other children who are at home for most of the week with dad due to the distance. Having a friendly and caring team around us at Alder Hey helps me during the days when it’s just me and Ava.
Nurse Gemma always has a smile when she pops her head in. They’ll ask questions to see how she’s coming along and seem genuinely excited when we have news that surgery has gone well or see her progressing. This shows that the care for their patients like Ava and for the whole family is as important to them as making the babies well again.
It’s been great to have an extended family here at Alder Hey during such an anxious time and we’re excited to eventually get Ava home so we can finally show her off!
